Requirements for healthy bones

To maintain strong bone tissue, the body needs sufficient exercise. Without it, bones will become progressively weaker. Therefore it is vital you get enough exercise by walking, cycling or weight lifting, for example. From the age of 50, fitness training offers the best balance between stimulating bone building and a risk of injury.

Besides exercise, good whole foods are essential. Much research has been done on the nutritional components needed to manage the process of bone building. The necessary substances include various minerals, trace elements, vitamins and proteins. They can be found in a healthy and varied diet. So make sure you eat a balanced diet.

Essential vitamin D is obtained only to a limited extent through diet. This vitamin is produced when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet light which, for instance, occurs when the sun is fairly high in the sky. Limited exposure to sunlight during the dark winter months and prolonged indoor time reduces vitamin D production.

Analyses of Europeans' dietary and lifestyle patterns show the most logical nutrients to offer in a dietary supplement that aims to support bone health. Osteo-8 contains - as the name implies - the 8 most important ingredients.

What can Osteo-8 do for you?

- The vitamin D3 and calcium in this supplement help inhibit mineral loss from bone tissue in postmenopausal women.* Lower bone mineral density increases the risk of bone fractures.

- Osteo-8 contains all the essential nutrients that contribute to maintaining normal bones. These include magnesium, zinc, calcium, vitamin C, vitamin D3 and vitamin K2. As a strong 'asset', Osteo-8 also contains the vital organic trace element boron.

- Vitamin B12, vitamin C and magnesium reduce fatigue and exhaustion. Use your energy for movement. Movement provides an essential building stimulus to bone tissue.

- The vitamin D3 reduces the risk of falls due to postural instability and muscle weakness. Falls are a risk factor for bone fractures in men and women from age 60 onwards.

Please note: Osteo-8 is not formulated to maintain healthy cartilage. For that, please refer to our supplements Arthro-5Glucosamine and/or Chondroitin.

What Osteo-8 does not contain?

Osteo-8 contains a smart selection of minerals, vitamins and trace elements that support bone health. Some nutrients are so abundant in food that it is quite easy to take enough of them in. Other nutrients require some extra attention when making food choices.

Manganese and phosphorus are essential for bone tissue. However, deficiencies of manganese and phosphorus are rare. Even when consuming a less healthy diet, it is still quite easy to take in these substances in sufficient amounts. Prolonged use of antacids may trigger a phosphorus deficiency (as well as many other deficiencies).

Because manganese and phosphorus deficiencies are so infrequent, we have not included these nutrients in Osteo-8.

Proteins are also necessary for maintaining and building bone and muscle tissue. However, the required amount of protein is several tens of grams per day. This does not fit into a compact bone formula that consists of 3 capsules a day. Therefore, make sure you eat foods that offer sufficient high-quality proteins, such as dairy, meat, fish, nuts or beans.

One particular dietary protein that specifically supports connective tissues and bones is collagen. You can use this as a separate supplement alongside Osteo-8.

Dosage

Take 3 capsules daily. Preferably with a meal that contains oily or fatty foods. This promotes the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins D3 and K2.

Do not exceed the maximum daily dosage of 6 capsules.

Dietary supplements must not be used as a substitute for a varied diet. A balanced diet contains enough vitamins.

Warnings

The vitamin K2 present in this supplement can have an influence on the effect of vitamin K antagonists. These are anticoagulant coumarin-based medicines (the most well-known are marcoumar, coumadin, fenprocoumon, acenocoumarol, and warfarin). Do not take this supplement in combination with this type of medication without consulting a doctor. Other blood thinners such as aspirin, rivaroxaban, and dabigatran do not pose a problem.

Eight essential ingredients in one

Osteo-8 contains eight essential nutrients for maintaining normal bones:

  • 3 minerals in optimally absorbable form: calcium, magnesium and zinc.
  • 4 vitamins in a potent but safe dosage: vitamin D3, vitamin K2, vitamin C and vitamin B12.
  • 1 organic trace element: boron.

Together, they form a powerful dietary supplement that helps maintain bone density. There is a story behind our choice of ingredients. You can read more about this below.

MINERALS

Contains, per daily dose of 3 capsules:

  • Calcium as calcium bisglycinate, calcium ascorbate and calcium fructoborate:
180 mg calcium (22% of RDA)
  • Magnesium as magnesium citrate:
110 mg magnesium from 750 mg magnesium citrate (29% of RDA)
  • Zinc bound to gluconic acid:
    4 mg (40% of RDA)

The mineral calcium is very important for building and maintaining healthy bones. When calcium is deficient, the body removes this substance from the bones, reducing bone density. It is therefore essential to consume a diet that has sufficient calcium. The mineral is mainly found in dairy products such as milk, yoghurt and cheese, but also in cereal products and in certain vegetables. It is possible to supplement this amount with a dietary supplement.

Osteo-8 includes calcium bisglycinate, a form where the calcium is encompassed by two amino acids. This makes this calcium easily absorbable. The relatively expensive calcium bisglycinate is most similar to the calcium found in food. However, we have kept our dosage modest as calcium is best sourced from food.

Osteo-8 further contains magnesium citrate, which is known to be easily absorbed. The acidity of magnesium citrate has a beneficial effect on the shelf life of vitamin K2.

The third mineral, zinc gluconate, can also be easily absorbed.

VITAMINS

Contains, per daily dose of 3 capsules:

  • Vitamin D3 as cholecalciferol:
25 mcg or 1000 IU (250% of RDA)
  • Vitamin K2 as stabilised menaquinone (MK7):
    114 mcg (152% of RDA)
  • Vitamin C bound to calcium (calcium ascorbate):
    40 mg (50% of RDA):
  • Vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin:
    5 mcg (200% of RDA)

Osteo-8 contains calcium in order to supplement the calcium we take in from our daily diet.  Vitamin D3 ensures that the body absorbs this mineral properly. Many people are familiar with the importance of vitamin D3 for healthy bones. Much less, however, is known about vitamin K2, which is why it is missing from many supplements despite being essential for maintaining healthy bones.

After the absorption of calcium, under the influence of vitamin D3, vitamin K2 leads the way.  In the absence of vitamin K2, the body finds it difficult to release calcium into the bone structure and instead, it is deposited in unwanted places. Vitamin D3 and K2 work as a team and cannot work without each other.

Vitamin C supports the formation of the firm structural protein collagen. Bone tissue gains resilience through collagen.

Methylcobalamin is a directly active form of vitamin B12.|

TRACE ELEMENT

Contains, per daily dose of 3 capsules:

  • Boron as calcium fructoborate:
2.6 mg, no % RDA determined

The trace element boron is a newbie and still little used in dietary supplements for healthy bones. This is unfortunate as boron helps maintain calcium levels in the body. The element reduces the amount of calcium (and magnesium) excreted through urine. Since calcium in particular is essential for healthy bones, boron?s importance should not be underestimated.

Those who eat healthily will ingest several milligrams of boron every day. An apple or a pear contains half a milligram, a large avocado 3 milligrams.

Absorption disorders, which prevent nutrients from being properly absorbed into the body, can cause a boron deficiency. The same goes for low-variety food intake, decreased appetite or medication use. One group more at risk of a boron deficiency are women during and after menopause. A dietary supplement can help. There are 2.6 milligrams of boron in Osteo-8, equivalent to the amount found in 5 apples.

The form of boron we use in Osteo-8 is calcium fructoborate. This is a natural form of boron and calcium, which is also present in food. European food authority EFSA has examined and approved the safety of calcium fructoborate for adults.

Combining Osteo-8 with a multivitamin

You can combine Osteo-8 well with Natural Multi, our multivitamin supplement. This is a good idea as Natural Multi contains vitamins and minerals that are outside the scope of Osteo-8. Think of, for instance, vitamins A and E, selenium, iodine and various B vitamins.

Some vitamins and minerals are in both Osteo-8 and Natural Multi. These include vitamins C, D3, K2, B12 and the minerals zinc and magnesium. When you use the standard daily dose of Osteo-8 (3 capsules) in combination with 1 capsule of Natural Multi, you will not ingest unjustified amounts of these vitamins and minerals. Natural Multi may even enhance the power of Osteo-8 due to the extra amount of vitamin D3 and K2.

Only when you choose to use the maximum dosage of Osteo-8 (6 capsules) do we not recommend the combination with Natural Multi. In this case, you might be taking in too much vitamin D3 and magnesium.

* This health claim applies to the maximum dose of 6 capsules per day and only to women aged 50 years or older. It is important that they take in at least 1,200 mg of calcium and 20 mcg of vitamin D per day through food and dietary supplements.
